Directed by Tim Sheader, this iconic global phenomenon features choreography by Olivier Award-winner Drew McOnie and design by Tony and Olivier Award-winner Tom Scutt. Don’t miss your chance to see this “gorgeous, thrilling, heavenly musical” – The Guardian.
Jesus Christ Superstar has returned to London in a major revival that reunites Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's groundbreaking rock musical with a new generation of theatre fans. Following a celebrated run at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, a Barbican transfer and an international tour, the production plays at the London Palladium before transferring to Theatre Royal Drury Lane later this year.
With Eurovision star Sam Ryder leading the cast as Jesus, a rotating line-up of celebrity guest stars playing King Herod, and more than 50 years of musical theatre history behind it, here's everything you need to know before booking.
Spoilers ahead! Jesus Christ Superstar follows the final days of Jesus Christ through the eyes of Judas Iscariot, exploring friendship, faith, celebrity and betrayal. Rather than presenting a traditional biblical retelling, the musical focuses on the people surrounding Jesus and the growing tensions that lead to his arrest and crucifixion.
Alongside Jesus and Judas, the story explores the roles of Mary Magdalene, Pontius Pilate and King Herod, asking timeless questions about power, belief and sacrifice. The result is a poignant interpretation that has continued to resonate with audiences for more than five decades.
The current revival plays at the London Palladium until Saturday 5 September 2026 before transferring to Theatre Royal Drury Lane from 16 October 2026 until 9 January 2027.
This marks the production's return to London after first opening at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in 2016. Since then, it has transferred to the Barbican and toured internationally, making this tenth anniversary season a fitting homecoming.
Singer-songwriter Sam Ryder makes his West End debut as Jesus after winning millions of fans during the Eurovision Song Contest, where he finished as runner-up for the United Kingdom in 2022.
Ryder recently shared that his journey to the role began unexpectedly during a recording session with Andrew Lloyd Webber in 2023. After spending the day working on an entirely different project, he asked if they could finish by playing ‘Gethsemane’ together around the piano. Looking back, Ryder has joked that the impromptu performance may have become the most unexpected audition of his career. Three years later, he's leading one of musical theatre's most celebrated roles.
In our review, we described the production as "a revival worth worshipping at the altar of musical theatre," praising Ryder's soaring vocals and emotionally rich performance. Read our full Jesus Christ Superstar review and discover more about Sam Ryder's West End debut.

There’s been more than enough Jesus Christ Superstar adaptations to feed the five thousand (nay, millions) since its genesis as a concept album by Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice in 1970, but this one performs enough miracles to justify another revival!
This version; based on the original Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production, has made the pilgrimage over the last decade from the park to the Barbican and out on a critically-acclaimed international tour, with director Tim Sheader and choreographer Drew McOnie at the helm, and incredible design by Tom Scutt with his iconic crucifix-cum-catwalk staging.
But now, we have Sam Ryder added to the mix. Most call it a ‘triple-threat’ but I’m calling it ‘The Holy Three’: the look of a 70s rock legend, the quietly-confident charisma to pull off this complex character, and those sweet, sweet heaven-sent vocals. I mean, wow! What would be the equivalent of pinning your fave rockstar’s poster to your bedroom wall in 30 Anno Domini? Oil on canvas? Maybe a fresco? Either way, Sam Ryder has got the lot!
While set during the final week of Jesus’ life, ALW’s rock opera uses the vintage backdrop of a Roman-occupied Jerusalem but redresses it with 1970s aesthetics. So, Mary Magdalene, played by the brilliant Desmonda Cathabel, floats around with bangles, braids and flowy dresses; giving Earth Mother / Janis Joplin / Stevie Nicks / Flower Child. Ethereal energy with, hands down, the BEST version of ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’ I’ve ever seen. Jesus is the slightly bemused hipster; rather than embracing the adoration of his followers, Ryder leans into the overwhelm; slipping to the edge of the stage as the crowd closes in around him, desperate to be healed, touched and saved. It's a reminder that, despite its biblical setting, Jesus Christ Superstar has always been as much about the crushing weight of public adoration as it is about the Passion itself.

Let a little sunshine into your life with La Fille Mal Gardée the Royal Ballet’s sublime revival of Frederick Ashton’s delightful comic romcom, which returns this week and runs into June. It’s billed as a ballet of pure sunshine, and so it proves in a show that mixes silliness and tenderness to create a light-as-air confection. In previous iterations the show featured a real-life pony. But in the era of War Horse, Paddington, and more, in this revival wooden automata will make its debut, replacing the traditional white Shetland pony.
If you enjoyed the recent BBC’s adaptation of The Other Bennet Sister, a sideways look at Pride and Prejudice through the overlooked sister, Mary, then you may also like Adrian Lukis’ Being Mr Wickham, which slips into the Garrick for one night this week. Lukis played the dastardly Wickham in the 1995 TV version of Pride and Prejudice (the one with Colin Firth), and now he returns to the rogue who is now past 60 and wants to tell his side of the story, the one that Jane Austen didn’t write.
